{"id":820,"date":"2007-07-16T16:46:50","date_gmt":"2007-07-16T15:46:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2007\/07\/fixing-ris-after-installing-windows-server-2003-sp2.htm"},"modified":"2007-07-16T16:46:50","modified_gmt":"2007-07-16T15:46:50","slug":"fixing-ris-after-installing-windows-server-2003-sp2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2007\/07\/fixing-ris-after-installing-windows-server-2003-sp2.htm","title":{"rendered":"Fixing RIS after installing Windows Server 2003 SP2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This may be an isolated incident, as I&#8217;ve already written about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2007\/03\/problems-installing-windows-server-2003-sp2-using-automatic-updates.htm\">how my Windows Server 2003 SP2 installation appeared to be broken (but was ultimately successful)<\/a> but ever since SP2 was installed, I&#8217;ve been warned about service startup failures and have been unable to PXE boot to RIS.<\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t bothered too much &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2005\/01\/problems-with-certain-nics-and-ris.htm\">my RIS server is used for XP builds<\/a> and I rarely need to build XP machines these days but as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2007\/06\/windows-vista-and-ati-display-drivers.htm\">there are no fully-featured Windows Vista display drivers for my IBM ThinkPad T40<\/a>, I wanted to rebuild it on XP today.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out that the problem was trivial.  RIS has been replaced in Windows Server 2003 SP2 by Windows Deployment Services (WDS).  WDS includes something called Windows Deployment Services Legacy &#8211; which looks remarkably like RIS to me (<a href=\"http:\/\/technet2.microsoft.com\/WindowsVista\/en\/library\/9e197135-6711-4c20-bfad-fc80fc2151301033.mspx#BKMK_2\">it uses WDS binaries to provide RIS functionality<\/a>).
