Unfortunately, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homelandstupidity.us\/2005\/05\/23\/nofollow-revisited\/\">as Michael Hampton explains at length, NoFollow hasn&#8217;t worked<\/a> &#8211; at least not based on the volume of comment spam that <a href=\"http:\/\/akismet.com\/\">Akismet<\/a> has removed since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2007\/03\/bye-bye-blogger-hello-wordpress.htm\">I moved to WordPress<\/a> ([[akismet_counter]] spam comments detected as you read this post).<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/images\/ifolloworange.gif?w=700&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"U comment.  I follow.\" \/>Randa Clay has created an alternative &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/randaclay.com\/archives\/the-i-follow-movement\">the I Follow Movement<\/a> &#8211; sites that acknowledge the contribution that commenting makes to the blogoshere (avoiding the need to specifically add links to a blogroll in order to spread some link love).  I figure that if NoFollow is not preventing comment spam, the least I can do is let the information people leave here in comments work for them in the search engines (<a href=\"http:\/\/randaclay.com\/archives\/the-i-follow-movement-is-not-dead\">at the risk that a few spam comments will still make it through<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.u-g-h.com\/index.php\/2007\/04\/12\/the-i-follow-movement\/\">Following Owen&#8217;s example, I&#8217;ve implemented the DoFollow WordPress plug-in<\/a> on this site so URLs in comments will now (hopefully) be picked up by the Googlebot, Slurp, MSNbot, Teoma and others.  Incidentally, if I specifically add <code>rel=\"nofollow\"<\/code> to a link, it still works &#8211; so it&#8217;s still possible to block links that you really don&#8217;t want the bots to follow (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2007\/04\/removing-duplicate-search-engine-content-using-robotstxt.htm\">robots.txt directives<\/a> are unaffected too).<\/p>\n<p>So, please, comment away &#8211; and consider doing the same on your site.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The rel=&#8221;nofollow&#8221; attribute on HTML anchors was supposed to help prevent comment spam.
