{"id":95,"date":"2005-05-03T15:09:00","date_gmt":"2005-05-03T15:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/markwilson.me.uk\/blog\/2005\/05\/handy-little-10100-ethernet-switch.htm"},"modified":"2007-07-25T22:19:01","modified_gmt":"2007-07-25T21:19:01","slug":"handy-little-10100-ethernet-switch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2005\/05\/handy-little-10100-ethernet-switch.htm","title":{"rendered":"Handy little 10\/100 Ethernet switch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--111513323533058359-->Sometimes, when I&#8217;m on a client site, I think that it would be really useful to have an Ethernet switch with me but generally they are too big to carry around (even my excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.netgear.com\/\">NetGear<\/a> DS108 hub is a bit on the chunky side). <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"GS-SW005 (front)\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/images\/gs-sw005-1.jpg?w=700&#038;ssl=1\" \/>Then, last week, I spotted one of my colleagues using a small network switch, about the size of a packet of cigarettes, with four ports (plus uplink). It turns out to be a GS-SW005 10\/100Mbps switch from <a href=\"http:\/\/tw.giga-byte.com\/\">Gigabyte Technology<\/a>. Now I&#8217;ve got one and it&#8217;s great! Although it is supplied with a DC power adapter, it was the USB power cord that sold it to me, meaning one less power supply to carry around. I got mine from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scan.co.uk\/products\/productinfo.asp?webproductid=15978\">Scan Computers<\/a> although for a \u00c2\u00a324.68 item I thought \u00c2\u00a310 for shipping was a bit steep (and even the \u00c2\u00a324.68 is a bit high considering it is also available in Australia for just AUS$20).<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"GS-SW005 (back)\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/images\/gs-sw005-2.jpg?w=700&#038;ssl=1\" \/>One word of warning &#8211; the product no longer appears on the Gigabyte Technology website, so it may have been discontinued; even so I would certainly recommend it to anyone who frequently needs to create ad-hoc networks for PC builds, demonstrations, or when working in a meeting room with only a single live network port.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes, when I&#8217;m on a client site, I think that it would be really useful to have an Ethernet switch with me but generally they are too big to carry around (even my excellent NetGear DS108 hub is a bit on the chunky side).
